The BID’s Sustainability Strategy aims for businesses to lead, and to support/influence partners, on enhancing the environmental and social conditions in the town. It complements the BID Business Plan and supports the delivery of BID projects.
Businesses improving their environmental and social footprint is a win – win outcome; as by taking such action they will enhance the environmental credentials and status of the town, thereby encouraging more people to come to a place committed to being ‘greener’.
Wimborne is proud of it’s dynamic community of volunteers, groups and businesses who work together to achieve many things, including these awards:
Wimborne BID wholeheartedly supports the ethos of the Fairtrade Foundation and strongly encourages businesses to sell fairtrade products to help farmers and their families in the global south.
Since 2006 the number of shops, cafes, restaurants and residential accommodation offering fairly traded goods has more than trebled.
For the latest information on shops, cafes, B&Bs and other outlets please visit Fairtrade Wimborne.
Plastic Free Community since 2018
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) Plastic Free Communities campaign aims to encourage everyone to rethink and reduce single use plastic, such as bottles, bags and coffee cups and instead encourage reuse, refill and repair. To qualify for the award, Wimborne War on Waste worked closely with the local Council, the BID, businesses, venues, community groups, schools and individuals to inspire all to make simple, positive changes, to choose alternatives to single use and promote a more sustainable, ethical culture of consumption.
To help promote refill you can find places in town to refill your water bottle and get a discount for using your coffee cup. You can also join the Repair Cafe, and Community Litter Picks.
Wimborne is one of only six towns to be awarded Bee Friendly Town status by the Bee Friendly Trust
Wilding Wimborne led the project to help pollinators in the town by working with people and businesses to build bee homes and enhance green spaces, whilst the BID funded the Bee Trail leaflet. You can also follow the BID supported Wimborne Green Trail.
All of these awards were made possible by local community groups working with the BID, local councils and businesses to adopt better environmental and ethical practices.
Find out more about what these community groups are doing by visiting Planet Wimborne – a one stop shop for community groups tackling the climate and ecological crises. You can find out what is happening in the town and get involved. The highlight of the calendar is the annual Planet Wimborne Green Festival – a week-long celebration of green events.
For those thinking of running a festival or event, Planet Wimborne and the BID have teamed up to develop a Green Festival guide to help you plan and run a more sustainable event. Planet Wimborne is happy to help (planetwimborne@gmail.com).
