The award-winning museum is looking for people of all ages and backgrounds who can spare a little time to support its work, meet new people and help visitors enjoy one of Wimborne’s best-loved heritage attractions.
Volunteer roles are varied and flexible. Opportunities include preparing food and waitressing in the busy Garden Tearoom, meeting and greeting visitors, helping with events, supporting school workshops, caring for the historic walled garden, helping in the gift shop and second-hand bookshop and training as a museum tour guide. There’s also opportunities to support the museum curator with archiving the thousands of fascinating exhibits the museum owns.
For those who enjoy bringing the past to life, how about helping with hands-on learning sessions, from playing a Victorian housekeeper or maid to supporting activities linked to Roman, Stone Age and wartime history?
The museum’s education workshops span more than 2,000 years of British history, from the Stone Age and Roman Britain to Victorian life and the World Wars. Volunteers help children and families experience history in memorable, practical ways, whether cooking in the Victorian kitchen, scrubbing in the washroom or exploring life as a Roman citizen.
Learning Officer and Family Officer Jackie Huggett said: “No experience is necessary as training is provided. All I need is people with a passion for history, who love the magic of museums and how they enrich children’s lives.”
Andy Putt, Operations Manager at the museum said: “Whether you’re a storyteller, gardener, performer, history enthusiast or simply enjoy meeting people, volunteering at the Museum of East Dorset offers a rewarding way to share your skills, learn something fresh and make new friends.”
