A Garden Retreat for All: Sensory Shed Opens at Museum of East Dorset

Sensory Shed Offers Soothing Space for Neurodiverse Visitors at Museum of East Dorset

The Museum of East Dorset is delighted to announce the opening of its new Sensory Shed — a calming, inclusive space nestled in the museum’s garden, designed to welcome visitors of all ages and abilities.

Once a humble garden shed, thanks to the efforts of talented museum volunteers and staff, this charming retreat now offers a multi-sensory experience featuring age-diverse toys, tactile fidget materials, musical instruments and gentle lighting and sounds. It’s a haven especially suited for children with special educational needs who may benefit from a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the museum.

Andy Putt, Operations Manager said: “Whether you’re a curious toddler, a sensory-seeking teen, or an adult in need of a mindful moment, the Sensory Shed invites you to explore, play, and unwind in a space where everyone is welcome.’

He added: ‘Our aim here at Museum of East Dorset is to be accessible to all. We also offer free sensory backpacks to visitors to use while in the museum and include a range of items including fidget toys, ear protectors and craft items – all designed to help visitors with special needs get the most out of the museum experience.’
